Panhala Fort also known as Panhalgad, is one of the most important forts of Maharashtra. This fort of Panhala is a witness to the rich history of Maharashtra during the reign of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The location of Panhalgad Fort was of prominence importance given it's strategic advantage towards viewing and supervising the trade routes of Bijapur. Built during the 12th century, Panhala Fort is one of the largest forts in the Deccan. Being part of the Sahyadri Ranges the fort has an awe-inspiring architecture which reflects the Bijapuri style. Almost all walls of this massive fort of Panhalgad are intact. The Panhala Fort is located in the Panhala Village which is about 22 km from Kolhapur.

1. The Statue of Tanaji Malusare - The huge statue of Tanaji Malusare at the entrance of Panhala Fort is pretty welcoming.


2. The Fort Gates - There are three fort gates that one can see. One is the Wagh Darwaza, the other is the Char Darwaja and then there is Teen Darwaza.


3. The Fort Wall - The 7 km long, triangular and massive fortifications around the Panhala Fort is still intact and strong. This wall is surrounded by dense vegetation and greenery.


4. Tombs - There are two main tombs that can be visited at Panhala Fort. One is of Jijabai and other is of Sambhaji II.

5. Temples - There are few temples that can be visited inside the Panhala Fort including the Mahalaxmi Temple, Ambabai Temple, Mahakali Temple and Someshwar Temple.


6. Andhar bavdi - In the earlier times, the Andhar Bavdi served as a well and main source of water for the people living inside the fort. The Andhar Bavdi is a 3 level construction and has a winding staircase right at the perimeter of the well. The whole structure of Andhar Bavdi is amazing.


7. Ambarkhana - Ambarkhana served as the storehouse for the Panhala Fort. This storehouse is located at the center of Panhala Fort and is constructed in the Bijapuri architectural style.


8. Rajdindi Bastion - The Rajdindi Bastion served as an emergency exit during those days. It is said that during the Battle of Pavankhind, Shivaji Maharaj exited through this bastion and headed towards Vishalgad Fort.


9. Dharma Kothi - Dharma Kothi is a stone building that served as an additional granary during those days.


10. Kalavanticha Mahal - Kalavanticha Mahal referred to the Courtesan's Terrace Room and is located on the east side of the fort closer to the rampart.


11. Sajja Kothi - Sajja Kothi was built in the Bijapuri style architecture and is a one story structure . It is said that Shivaji Maharaj had imprisoned Sambhaji in the Sajja Kothi when he threatened to defect to Aurangzeb.

How To Reach Morachi Chincholi near Pune


Morachi Chincholi is located closer to Pune. This ideal weekend getaway is situated near to the Pune - Ahmednagar Highway. If you are driving down to Morachi Chincholi from Pune, you can drive down on the Pune Ahmednagar Highway and turn left onto SH54 after Shikrapur at Pabal Phata. From here drive down, until you pass Ganegaon and Varude. You will reach Morachi Chincholi.

For those who drive down from Pune via Aundh or Chinchwad, the ideal way to drive down on the Pune - Nashik Highway up to Bhosari. Once you reach Bhosari take the immediate right before Alandi foot over bridge and travel up to Shel - Pimpalgaon for the Shikrapur route and then continue the previous route.

People traveling from Mumbai to Morachi Chincholi should drive down to Panvel and carry on the journey with the old Mumbai - Pune Highway. From here drive down up to Lonavla towards Talegoan. Located in the Western Ghats, Kalsubai is a famous trekking destination in Maharashtra. Just 12 km from Bhandardhara the Kalsubai trek offers a perfect trek with well marked route. There are numerous trekking routes to reach the mountain peak though. The base village for Kalsubai Trek is Bari, which is 10 km from Bhandardhara and all the trekking routes for the summit start from here. The most promising route for the Summit of Mount Kalsubai starts from the Hanuman Temple, which is an important landmark for the trekkers. It also serves as a resting point for those who have made back from the trek. This route takes you directly to the summit. Harishchandragad - A Trekking Delight in Maharashtra

About Harishchandragad


Other than a fantastic trekking opportunity, Harishchandragad has lot of historical importance to boast about. Located 50 km from Bhandardhara, Harishchandragad is one of the famous hill forts located in the Ahmednagar districts. Thus it is part of the hill forts within the Western Ghats. This fort was ruled by Moguls until 1747 after which the Marathas captured it. The caves within the Harishchandragad find their mentions in ancient scripts and Puranas. It is said that during the 14th century, Maharshi Changdev resided in one of these caves and used it as a place for meditation. More and more caves could be found within this hill fort which claim to be carved out in the 11th Century AD. The fort gets the name due to the presence of Harishchandreshwar Temple within.  This temple finds it's place in one of the holy places visited by Hindus. Towards the east side of this temple is a beautiful lake named Saptathirtha Lake. Other than this temple, there are many temples such as Nageshwar Temple, Kedareshwar Temple and caves within the hill fort of Harishchandragad that depict intricate carvings found in the Medieval Period. The highest peak of Harishchandragad is Taramati. Taramati Peak offers scenic view of the surrounding expanse and one can see Kalsubai,  Malshej Ghat, Ratangad, Jivdan and Naneghat from here. Few other peaks apart from Taramati peak include Rohidas and Harishchandra.




Trekking in Harishchandragad


The famous Konkan Kada of Harishchandragad is considered as one of the most challenging trek till date with it's altitude height of 3500 feet. This also happens to be the most famous peak of this hill. Other than Konkan Kada there are many treks available with so many amazing peaks all over the hill fort. Each hill peak offers mesmerizing view of the beautiful scenic surroundings below. And hence trekking through this hill fort is really worth it! There are in all seven routes to trek on this hill fort. The trekking to Harishchandragad suits everyone from novice to a champion trekker. The closest base village for one of the treks in Harishchandragad is Khireshwar. Khireshwar village is at a distance of 8 km from Harishchandragad. This trek route is a straight trail which passes through Tolar Khind and straight away leads to Harishchandreshwar Temple. The route timing is roughly three hours and one passes through rocky patches, small hills and streams in between. Other than Khireshwar, one can also trek to Harishchandragad from Paachnai Village which is about 48 km from Bhandardara. This is one of the most scenic trek and the difficulty level of this trek is easy to medium with forest path, rocky patches and steep climbs. This trek from Paachnai Village is considered to be the best for beginners. The third base village to Harishchandragad is Walhivale Village from where you can carry on trek through Nalichi Vaat. This trek leads you to Konkan Kada and is considered one of the trickiest climb. The difficulty level of this trek is medium to difficult and one needs safety gear such as ropes for the trek as there are steep climbs and rocky patches all throughout. Overnight camping is allowed on the peak.

Harishchandragad is located in the Ahmednagar Districts of Maharashtra. It is 50 km from  Bhandardhara, 166 km from Pune and 218 km from Mumbai. The nearest airport for Harishchandragad is Mumbai Airport, from here you have the option of continuing your journey by road. One can reach Harishchandragad from Igatpuri via State Highway 44, from Ahmadnagar via NH61, from Pune via NH60 and from Kalyan via NH160. One can hire private cabs from all these stations to reach Harishchandragad. Bus services are also available from all these stations to this hill fort. The nearest station for Harishchandragad is Igatpuri. One can reach Igatpuri station via train from Kalyan Station. One can also take buses from Kalyan Station to Harishchandragad. Buses that ply to Malshej Ghat from Kalyan are the perfect option for Harishchandragad. If you ply by this bus, get down at Moroshi Naka and then walk down to Walhivale Village or get down to Khubi Phata and walk down to Khireshwar Village. You also have the option of hiring private cabs and travel up to the base villages. From Pune you have the option of travelling to Khireshwar Village by buses that ply regularly from Shivajinagar bus stand.

Reaching Vajrai Waterfall by Train: One has the options of buses and auto-rickshaws from Satara Railway Station to reach Vajrai Waterfall. One can also rent car from Satara Station. It takes approximately an hour to reach Vajrai Waterfalls from Satara Station.

1. The bottom part of Vajrai Waterfall around the rocks is slippery, especially during monsoons. Hence venturing into the water should be carefully done.

2. The ponds of Vajrai Waterfall are deep and hence swimming should be avoided.

3. During heavy rains, its better to avoid visiting this place for safety reasons.

4. There are possibilities of encountering the presence of snakes and other creatures due to the presence of dense vegetation around. You need to be alert and careful.

5. Please don't litter around.

6. Consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited.

7. It is advisable to leave this place before dark.
