Chikoo Festival 2019 in Bordi

About Chikoo Festival in Bordi

For last five years, Bordi town of Maharashtra has been organizing the annual Chikoo Festival. But I am sure not many are aware of that! Including me :) Well, one of my dear reader came up with this information and I would really love to thank him for letting me know. The annual Chikoo festival is celebrated in the town of Bordi to commemorate the production of high quality chikoo fruit(which is one of the main sources of income for the local Warli tribes) and also to promote sustainable growth for these local plantations in Dahanu.

Chikoo fruit also known as Sapodilla, mudapples or even noseberry is one of the most delicious and nutritious fruits one could find. In the state of Maharashtra, two towns namely Bordi and Gholvad are known to be the major producers of chikoo. Hence Chikoo Festival 2019 is one of their way to share the never seen before North Konkan heritage and identity with the people from all over the world. The festival is quite popular among people from state of Maharashtra. This annual Chikoo Festival is organized by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation(MTDC) and runs for two days. The annual Chikoo Festival 2019 Bordi will be held on 2nd and 3rd of February 2019 on the Bordi beach.

But if you think the festival is all about chikoos, then you did get it wrong! The chikoo festival does revolve around the fruit but it also has many other activities instored for the visitors. Though the main approach of the this festival is to learn more about the chikoo fruit by visiting chikoo plantations, plucking the fruit right off the trees and enjoying farm tours. But this two day cultural carnival has so much more planned up for you to enjoy and indulge in a sheer rural bliss.

This non-profit initiative by MTDC and REWF(Rural Entrepreneurship Welfare Foundation) promotes and provides a progressive platform for the budding local entrepreneurs to showcase their produce. The cultural carnival of Chikoo Festival will avail its visitors a two days pleasure of shopping, culinary indulgence, tribal art and other activities. Local tribes are encouraged to display and sell their homemade produce such as jams and juices from chikoo, spices and other artifacts. Warli artifacts including handicrafts, paintings and cane baskets would be showcased at the festival. Visitors can also participate in fun activities such as sand art, chikoo marathon, night-camping, bicycle trail, beach kabaddi, mountain trek, and much more. Local activists will be hosting various workshops for the visitors.

Winery Tour to Hill Zill Wines

The two day annual Chikoo Festival is all about the local fruit produce and chikoo wine is one of them. Wine enthusiasts can enjoy chikoo wine tours and wine tasting at world's first chikoo winery here at Bordi. The guided tour to this award winning chikoo winery will cost INR300. The award winner Fruzzante Chikoo Wine is part of the winery that is placed within the Hill Zill Resort. Hill Zill Resort is a luxurious resort where you can taste one of its kind the delicious chikoo wine named Fruzzante. The Hill Zill Chikoo Wines which is just 3 hours away from Mumbai is run by family of farmers who came up with the idea of chikoo wine. This chikoo wine labeled as Fruzzante is a concoction prepared from the famous Dahanu chikoos. One of its kind this wine can be ordered in any local wine shop in Dahanu or you could buy it at the Hill Zill Resort.
