Matheran is at a close proximity to Mumbai (95 km) and Pune (121 km). Hence Matheran can be reached through Mumbai and Pune. Here's how:

By air: The nearest airport for Matheran is Mumbai Airport, around 95 km away.

By train it takes at least 1 hour 40 minutes to reach Neral. once in Neral take a private taxi or the Toy train of Matheran. Matheran has a narrow gauge line which is a 8km track for Matheran. Since this toy train passes through valleys and mountain slopes, it takes lot more time to reach Matheran. But the experience is awesome.

One can find developed walking trails which pass through a line of streams, narrow gauge line and valleys making it a great and beautiful journey.
