Though now left with ruins still the fort stands tall with concealed entrance that leaves us shocked. The fort spreads on an area of around 48 acres with 30 feet walls, dense as much as 12 feet. The fort is said to be constructed with the help of 100 Portuguese experts who were invited by Shivaji Maharaj. More than 3000 workers carried the constructuion work under the guidance of Hiroji Indulkar who was the architect of the fort.

The Sindhudurga Fort is yet best preserved and restoring work is on cards for the fort presently. Other than the huge stone structure there is the mian gate of huge bastions which faces the Sindhudurga City, named after it. Within the fort one finds many temples, wells, tanks and even mosques.
