Hemis Festival is one of the most popular annual festival celebrated in Ladakh. This extraordinary cultural festival of Ladakh is celebrated for two days usually in the month of July. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava and is a two day celebration that marks the victory of good over evil.
On these days one can find all the locals dressed up in colorful attires and wearing masks. Travelers from all over the world make it a point to visit the Hemis Monastery which serves as the biggest Gompa during this festival. The whole monastery is decorated with colors. Artists are seen wearing huge masks and colorful attires, and they perform cultural dances on this occasion.
A handicraft market is also held during this period which exhibits and sells local handicrafts.
