It is said that this town of Pithoragarh used to be one of the main center of power during the Chand Rajas of Kumaon. The magnificent fort of Pithoragarh built by the Gurkhas in 18th century still stands tall.

Built in the 18th century by the Gurkhas, Pithoragarh Fort is a charm and one of the major attractions of Pithoragarh town. This fort still stands tall and has a majestic grandeur. The Pithoragarh Fort is perched on a hilltop overlooking the Soar Valley on the outskirts of the city about 7 km from the town of Pithoragarh. From the fort tourists get to enjoy a spectacular view of the Himalayan ranges and the scenic Kali Kumaon River.
Tucked within the Soar Valley is the sacred Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It forms one of the sacred placed to be visited in Pithoragarh. It takes an hour trek from the town to reach this temple. The temple is based 10 meters within a dark cave on a hill top and offers spellbounding view of the scenic surroundings.
Located on one of the highest mountain peak is the Dhwaj Shikar Temple that is dedicated to Goddess Jayanti Mata. Being perched on a mountain peak, the temple offers breathtaking view of the surrounding panorama. One also gets to see snowcapped peaks of Nepal border. The Dhwaj Shikar Temple is located 10 km from the Pithoragarh town and one has to take a 4 km trek to reach the temple. Also the surrounding areas of the Dhwaj Shikar Temple is home to Himalayan black bears and snow leopards.
At a distance of 8 km from Pithoragarh lies the majestic Chandak Hills. These hills are perched within the Soar Valley and offer splendid views of the majestic Himalayan Range. It also offers best trekking opportunities and is one of the popular picnic spot in Pithoragarh.
Gangolihat is a small town famous for the Shakti Peethas of Goddess Kalika. This town is located 76 km from Pithoragarh and serves as a tiny hill station and also one of the popular picnic spots nearby. Being popular for its caves and temples, Gangolihat is regularly flooded with tourists and pilgrims. There are many archaeological sites in Gangolihat.
