The best time to visit Chikmagalur is throughout the year but the ideal timing when Chikmagalur is flocked with tourist is from September to early May.

Places of Attractions in and around Chikmagalur Hill Station in Karnataka


Mountain Circuit


Being one of the main attractions of Chikmagalur, Mountain Circuit is a traveler's delight. It covers the three main peaks of Chikmagalur including the Sheethalgiri, the Baba Budan Giri and the Mullayanagari. To cover the loop one has to start with the Sheethalgiri Peak through Kaimara junction. The whole are is scenic and paradisaical. The pathway are windy and mostly misty. There is a 1000 years old ancient temple of Mallikarjuna Swamy that one comes across. From there one heads to the next peak which is the Baba Budan Giri where you come across a Shaktipeeth of Saint Inam Dattatreya which is located on top of the valley and offers a panoramic view of the surroundings. The last stop from here is the Mullayanagiri Mountains.








Mullayanagiri Peak


A prominent part of the Mountain Circuit, Mullayanagiri Peak is located on the Chandra Drona Hill ranges of the Western Ghat in Chikmagalur. It is the highest mountain peak within this hill range and stands tall at the height of 6330 feet. Mullayanagiri Hills are also considered as one of the best trekking trails in South India. The Mullayanagiri Peak gets it's name because of the small temple dedicated to Mulappa Swamy, perched on the summit. As per the ancient tales, Mulappa Swamy used to meditate in this caves. Not very deep, this temple is kind of a cave which is accessible from the summit. The trekking trail of Mullayanagiri is around half a day trek and takes roughly 3 to 4 hours to ascend. The difficulty level of Mullayanagiri Trek is moderate and the trail is quite scenic given the scenic panorama all around the peak.







Kalhatti Falls


Being a hilly terrain, one can witness many waterfalls all over the forest expanse of Chikmagalur, but one such waterfall that is popular among the tourist and is worth visiting is the Kalhatti Falls. Kalhatti Falls is located about 10 km from Chikmagalur and is absolute scenic. The unique thing about this falls is the location. This rustic waterfall is the perfect combination of serenity and ethereality, as the waterfall gushes from an height of 122 meters right over the three stone carvings of elephants that stand at the entry of the Lord Veerbhadra Temple amidst charming environs. The Kalhatti Waterfalls attracts many tourists, especially pilgrims during the period of March and April when the annual fair is held here in the temple.







Kudremukh


The second highest peak of Karnataka, Kudremukh is located in the Kudremukh National Park within the Chikmagalur districts. Kudremukh means 'horse's face' and the peak gets such name because from one side of the mountain, one can witness a particularly 'horse faced' scenic view . The Kudremukh mountain also includes a small hill station within it's expanse. The Kudremukh National Park is a part of thick hilly forest which is tucked with thick layer of moss that gives the hills a stunning carpeted appearance. This national park is home to lion tailed macaque, spotted deer, sloth bears and Malabar civets.






Kemmangundi


One can visit the Kemmangundi Hill Station which is one of the popular retreat and most visited places in Chikmagalur. Kemmangundi has a complete elements of hill station as it is blessed with cascading waterfalls, breezing streams, ornamental gardens, lush greenery and extensive valley view. Kemmangundi derives it's name for the red soil it bores. This place was a summer retreat for Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV who later donated it to the Government of Karnataka. The Rose Garden and Rock Garden in Kemmangundi are maintained by the Horticultural Department of Karnataka. One can witness an amazing sunrise from the Z Point in Kemmangundi.







Hebbe Falls


The cascading Hebbe Falls is one of the popular points of Kemmangundi known for it's mesmerizing waterfall. There are many known coffee plantations around this waterfall. Known to be one of the scenic spots in Chikmagalur, the waterfall resides amidst a forest enriched with medicinal herbs. Hence this place attracts a lot of biologists and scientists. The waterfall cascades over the rocks from an height of 551 feet in two steps namely, Didda Hebbe and Chikka Hebbe.   The water pond below this falls is also said to be a drinking spot among the tigers in the surrounding forest areas. Hence the waterfall is presently restricted to public.






Coffee Yatra Museum


An initiative of the Coffee Board of India, the Coffee Yatra Museum is all about the journey of knowing the coffee making process right from subjective display of picking, drying, grinding the coffee to short videos on understanding the entire coffee process.The Coffee Yatra Museum is closed on weekends.

How to Reach Chikmagalur Hill Station in Karnataka


The nearest airport for Chikmagalur is Mangalore Airport which is 113 km away. Mangalore Airport is very well connected via flights to major cities in India including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore. One can get hired taxis from the airport to Chikmagalur.

Chikmagalur does not have a railway station but the nearest railway station for Chikmagalur is Kadur and Tarikere. From Bangalore Railway Station one has to take a train to Kadur, which is located about 40 km from Chikmagalur. It takes approximately three hours to reach Kadur from where one has an option of buses and cabs to continue their journey to Chikmagalur. The other railway station connected to Chikmagalur is Tarikere which is about 57 km away.
