Khajjiar also works as a respite for tourists traveling between Dalhousie and Chamba. Khajji Nag Temple



Being one of the most charming spots of Himachal Pradesh, Khajjiar derives it's name from the Khajji Nag Temple which is part of this place since 12 century AD. This majestic temple of Naga(snake) was built by then the King of Chamba, Preeti Singh. This sacred shrine of Khajjiar  is also know as the 'Golden Devi Temple' because of the temple's golden dome.

Best Time to Visit Khajjiar


Khajjiar is quite popular among tourists during summer.The weather is crystal clear and pleasant during summer. Hence the best time to visit Khajjiar is from early March to June. But for those who wish to have a sneak peek at snow visit Khajjiar from late September to early December. Snow adds to the beauty of Khajjiar. The climate is spectacular and many snow related sport activities can be enjoyed. Winter gets bitter cold and hence should be avoided, that is from December to February.







Places to Visit in and nearby Khajjiar


The best way to enjoy Khajjiar is to enjoy the long walks and explore the area. The strolls and nature walks in and around the deodar trees and the sprawling meadow is quite popular among tourists.

The Khajji Nag Temple that gives this place its name is one of the places of attractions in Khajjiar. This temple was built in 12th century and is dedicated to the Khaji Nag(Lord of Serpents). The architecture of this temple is pretty grandeur with a combination of Hindu and Mughal architecture. The temple rests on the banks of the Khajjiar Lake and is open from 6 am to 8 am everyday for its devotees.







 Amidst the vast meadow is the Khajjar Lake which is quite popular among tourists. This 1.5 sq km lake is one of the well-liked picnic spots in Khajjiar.

The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary atop Khajjiar is a sprawling 30.69 sq.km sanctuary that can be visited. This wildlife reserve calls for enjoyable nature walks and innumerable hikes. One can spot  Himalayan black marten, langur, jackal, bear, barking goral and leopard in this reserve.The whole sanctuary is pretty scenic and breathtaking. It is open from 7 am to 6 pm everyday.






Various adventure activities and sports can be enjoyed by tourists in Khajjiar, few of which include paragliding, horse riding and zorbing(a recreational sport of rolling downhill the Khajjiar slopes by being inside a transparent and inflatable ball)

How to Reach Khajjiar


The quaint little hill station of Khajjiar can be accessed only by road. Khajjiar is located 24 km from Dalhousie and 22 km from Chamba. It is well connected to most of the towns in the Chamba Valley by road. Many local transport buses ply regularly to Khajjiar from Dalhousie and Chamba. One can also hire private taxis to Khajjiar from Dalhousie and Chamba.
