About Nohkalikai Falls

One of the tallest waterfalls in India, Nohkalikai Falls serve as a prime tourist destinations in State of Meghalaya. Located near Cherrapunjee, Nohkalikai Falls are a pleasant surprise as they emerge through huge rocky base amidst the forest and fall from the top of the hill into a bluish pool which as if awaits for the fall. The waterfall offers additional beauty during monsoons, as along with this big fall, many small falls fall from this rocky head making it worth watching.

Nohkalkai Falls has a legendary tale attached to it for the name it has derived. According to this legendary tale, Ka Likai was a mother of a daughter when she remarried. But this new husband was jealous of his step-daughter and killed her when Ka Likai went out working. The step father not just killed his step daughter but it seems cooked her flesh. Once Ka Likai returned she found her daughter's finger in the betel nut basket and understood what happened in the house. Badly hurt by her daughter's death Ka Likai jumped off the cliff and thus the cliff got the name Nohkalikai which means 'Jump of Ka Likai'.

Best time to visit Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai Falls are at its best in monsoons and post monsoons. With many small falls joining the big waterfall during monsoons by falling parallel to it, this falls are more beautiful in monsoons. Thus the best time to visit Nohkalikai Falls is from June to early January.

How to reach Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai Waterfalls is 52 km from Shillong, and one can hire a private car from Shillong or Cherrpaunjee to reach this waterfall.
