About Mount Kalsubai 


Located in the Western Ghats, Kalsubai is a famous trekking destination in Maharashtra. It is the highest peak of Maharashtra with an altitude of  5400 ft and hence Mount Kalsubai has been lauded with the title of 'Everest of Maharashtra'. Mount Kalsubai is located 165 km from Mumbai and 174 km from Pune. The peak of Kalsubai rests on a small plateau which offers breathtaking view of the neighbouring area which comprises the Sahyadri Mountain Range perched happily amidst the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary. Once on top of the summit, the captivating view mesmerizes you. Mount Kalsubai attracts too many visitors comprising of trekkers, wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers and devotees of the deity Kalsubai. Small temple perches on the hilltop which is the temple of deity Kalsubai. The temple has great significance among locals and many of visitors trek the Kalsubai Peak just to offer prayers at this temple. There is a religious fair held here every year on Navratri Utsav.




Kalsubai Trek


Settled amidst the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, the Kalsubai Peak offers a real challenging trek. The difficulty level of Kalsubai Trek is medium to hard. Frequent trekkers may find the trek moderate but novices could find the difficulty level high and challenging, especially the stairs at the end.The total trek distance is around 15 to 17 km and would take 3 to 6 hours to complete. There are many spots where you could rest in between. The trekking of Mount Kalsubai is one of the most popular treks of Western Ghats. Just 12 km from Bhandardhara the Kalsubai trek offers a perfect trek with well marked route. There are numerous trekking routes to reach the mountain peak though. The base village for Kalsubai Trek is Bari, which is 10 km from Bhandardhara and all the trekking routes for the summit start from here. The most promising route for the Summit of Mount Kalsubai starts from the Hanuman Temple, which is an important landmark for the trekkers. It also serves as a resting point for those who have made back from the trek. This route takes you directly to the summit. The traveling route to reach the base village Bari is pretty scenic, especially during and post monsoon. The wide expanse on either side of the tar road to Bari is abounded with countless fields of wheat crop.



Best Time to visit Mount Kalsubai


A visit to Mount Kalsubai or Kalsubai Peak is ideal post monsoon as the lush greenery adds to it's existing beauty. One gets to enjoy series of streams, waterfall all over the hills post monsoon and the lush greenery of the forest below adds to it's beauty. Hence the best time to visit Kalsubai Peak is Mid September to early March.

How to Reach Kalsubai Trek 


Mount Kalsubai is located in the Ahmednagar districts of Maharashtra. It is 165 km from Mumbai, 174 km from Pune, 61 km from Nashik and 12 km from Bhandardhara. The nearest airport for Mount Kalsubai is Mumbai Airport, from here you have the option of continuing your journey by road to Bhandardhara. Once in Bhandardhara you have the option of taking bus, hire a private cab of even walk towards Bari Village. One can reach Mount Kalsubai from Igatpuri on the Mumbai - Nashik route via State Highway 44, from Ahmadnagar via Ahmednagar - Loni - Dhanora  Road, from Pune via NH60 and from Kalyan via NH160 and State Highway 44. The route from Pune to Mount Kalsubai by road is Pune – Nashik Phata – Alephata – Sangamner – Bhandardara – Bari. One can hire private cabs from all these stations to Bhandardhara from where one can reach Mount Kalsubai base village . Bus services are also available from all these stations to the base village. The nearest station for Mount Kalsubai  is Igatpuri. One can reach Igatpuri station via train from Kalyan Station. Buses that ply to Malshej Ghat from Kalyan are the perfect option for Mount Kalsubai . You also have the option of hiring private cabs and travel up to the base village.

Tips to Remember During Kalsubai Trek


1. Start early.

2.  It is advisable to carry enough drinking water if you plan to camp overnight.

3. There is a lunch house on the way up towards the summit, which can work as a resting area and also you could order lunch here for nominal charges.

4. Carry sunscreen, goggles and hat.

5. Do not carry lot of eatables and if you do carry, see that they are well packed inside. There is lot of monkey trouble on route the trek.

6. Iron railing is been provided on few trek routes along the vertical hill slopes for safe trekking.
