Nagarhole National Park expanded to a great expanse only after 1976, when it became a National park in true terms. Earlier it was declared as a national park in 1955, but limited to a certain area. The Nagarhole National Park used to be a hunting ground for the Raja, Maharajas of Mysore. An exclusive hunting sport that this forest was taken on to. But things changed for Nagarhole National Park after the declaration.

The River Kabini that flows through Nagarhole National Park forms the main source of water for animals. Other than this river, many other rivers and streams flow through this park. The deciduous forests, the swamp area and the tropical forests in Nagarhole make it a densely vegetated area. Main trees found here include sandal, teak, eucalyptus and many more.
